Plane is the fastest and easiest way to arrive in Florianópolis. The Hercilio Luz International Airport (FLN) is only 12 kilometers from the city center and is well connected by buses and taxis. The island is only about 1 hour away by plane from São Paulo and 2 hours away from Rio de Janeiro, making this an ideal destination for your Portuguese language holiday. The Brazilian airline TAM provides international and domestic services to Florianópolis. Flights are available from JFK International (NY), Miami, Madrid, London, Frankfurt, Milan and major cities in South America – usually with stop-over in Sao Paul or Rio de Janeiro. 

By Bus

The bus terminal on the island, Rita Maria, located by the Pedro Ivo Campos Bridge, not only allows locals and tourists to go back and forth from Brazil to Florianópolis but also connects them to other South American destinations including Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. The main bus companies are: Catarinense, Reunidas, Santo Anjo and Eucatur.

This option is not the most recommended as the main road BR-101 is known to be busy; however, for the more adventurous this may be a preferred option. The island is connected to several major Brazilian cities by bridge. Making travel by car an option for arriving to Florianópolis, if you prefer a longer and more scenic route.

By Bus

You can reach almost all the beaches by using the bus services offered by the island. Prices vary depending on what kind of bus you take, air-conditioned or not. The average travel time from the city center to the beaches is about 35 minutes.

By Car

It is also recommended to explore the island by car. There are various car rental services around the island and at the airport. At the airport there is a Localiza rental office as well as a Hertz office. Lemans Rental Car is known for reliable service. They deliver and pick up from anywhere, including the airport and bus station.

Although this is a more expensive option, it allows you to move around at your own pace, very comfortably, and make sure that you get to see all the sites Florianópolis has to offer.
