Arrival to Playa Tamarindo
Costa Rica has two international airports: Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Liberia and Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela. You are recommended to fly into Liberia as it is only 62 kilometers (39 miles) away from Tamarindo. Taxis are available from the airport to Tamarindo for around USD$70.00 and take around an hour. A series of international and national airlines have flights into Liberia, however few come form Europe. The following airlines have semi-regular flights to Liberia: Air Canada, American Airlines, Sky Service, Delta, SANSA and United Airlines.
Should you prefer to fly into San José, a six hour bus trip can be booked to Tamarindo for around USD$5.00 with Empresas Alfaro. This option is more economic than flying to Liberia but less direct.
Transportation in Playa Tamarindo
There are many rental car agencies in and around Tamarindo, including Alamo and Economy Rent-a-Car. This option will give you more freedom to explore surrounding towns and beaches. However, there is no gas station in Tamarindo, but gas can be bought in neighboring towns.

Motorcycle and bicycles can be rented in Tamarindo to get around. As there is no gas station in Tamarindo, renting a bike is a more economic option. This option gives you the liberty to explore beaches and the town of Tamarindo while getting a great workout.
There are boats located at the northern end of Tamarindo that can take you across the Tamarindo Estuary over to Playa Grande for around USD$1.25.
