Puerto Vallarta has an international airport, Gustavo Diaz Ordaz (PVR); it is 6 kilometers (4 miles) outside of Puerto Vallarta. The airport has services to and from destinations all over the world. If you decide to stay with a host family it is not uncommon for the family to pick you up directly from the airport. Should you choose private accommodation, a taxi can cost you anywhere between US$10 and US$20 to get to the city center.
Buses can be taken from other major cities in Mexico to Puerto Vallarta. From Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta you can expect to spend between US$30 and US$50 on the 5 hour journey. There is a 10 hour bus service to Mexico City that costs around US$100.

The city center and the seaside are located very close to each other and walking is a great option for moving around free of cost. Since there is very little rainfall in Puerto Vallarta, the weather is always on your side as well. Taxis are not expensive and are a great way if you want to go to further distances. Taxis can be pre-ordered or picked-up off the street. An eight minute taxi ride will cost you around US$3 or US$5.
If you prefer a private form of transportation and more independence then it is definitely worth renting a car. Renting a car can be expensive during the high tourist season, but there are usually discounts. It is more efficient to book your rental in advance online.
